What is a Write-Off and How Do They Happen?

An insurance write-off is a vehicle that has sustained significant damages or mechanical breakdowns to the point where the cost to repair it outweighs the overall cost of the vehicle itself. When a vehicle is written off, it is placed into one of four categories (A, B, S, or N) depending on the severity of the damage:

  • Category A – The most severe damages. The car must be scrapped in its entirety and cannot return to the road.
  • Category B – Similar to Category A, but some parts can be salvaged to repair other vehicles. Category B cars can never return to the road.
  • Category S – Stands for "Structural" damage. These vehicles can return to the road after repairs. Formerly known as Category C.
  • Category N – Stands for "Non-Structural" damage. These vehicles can be repaired and returned to the road, often with less damage than Category S cars. Formerly known as Category D.

You don’t always have to return a Category S or N write-off to your insurers and can negotiate to buy the vehicle back and repair it yourself. If you intend to return a Category S write-off to the road, you must re-register it with the DVLA. Category N vehicles require notification to the DVLA, but no re-registration.

Your insurance policy will be cancelled when your insurers deem the vehicle a write-off, and you will receive a payout while the car becomes the insurer’s property.

Step-by-Step Guide to Selling a Written-Off Car

1. Initial Write-Off from Your Insurers

When your car has been involved in an incident and your insurers have been informed, they will carry out their own calculations as to its value and likely repair costs. If the cost of repairs outweighs the car's value, it will be deemed a write-off.

2. Negotiate Insurance Buy-Back

If you believe you could get more for your car by selling it yourself, you can buy it back from your insurers. Inform them of your intention as soon as possible and be prepared to negotiate, as they often start with a low offer.

3. Get a Quote from Scrap My Car

Once the car is back in your possession, simply enter your vehicle’s registration and your postcode into our instant quote generator. This will provide a basic quote based on scrap prices, but the next step makes all the difference.

4. Provide More Details

A member of our team will call to discuss your car in detail. This allows us to provide a more accurate price based on the exact condition of your vehicle as a salvage vehicle for one of our trusted buyers.

5. Arrange Collection

Once you’ve accepted a quote from one of our specialist buyers, we’ll connect you with a collection agent to arrange a convenient time for pickup—free of charge. Once the car has been collected, your funds will be released.
